Tax residency rules in Sweden
The government has asked the Riksdag to define habitual stay as more than 160 days in a calendar year, or more than 120 days if the previous year also exceeded 120. The Riksdag committee is scheduled to prepare it on 5 November 2026 with a decision on 25 November 2026, so it is not law yet.
- Tax year period
- 1 January to 31 December (as of 2026)ⓘSveriges riksdag (Inkomstskattelagen 1999:1229)“Beskattningsåret är för fysiska personer ett kalenderår.”View source · accessed 2026-10-26 — The tax year for individuals is the calendar year. The return for a year is normally due on 2 May of the following year.
- Worldwide income taxation
- Residents are taxed on income from Sweden and abroad, while non-residents are taxed only on defined Swedish-source income and need not report foreign income to Skatteverket. PwC counts 92 tax treaty partners and notes foreign tax credits against double taxation. [source]Sveriges riksdag (Inkomstskattelagen 1999:1229)“Den som är obegränsat skattskyldig är skattskyldig för alla sina inkomster i Sverige och från utlandet.”View source · accessed 2026-10-26
- Former resident capital gains ten year rule
- 10 years (as of 2026)ⓘSveriges riksdag (Inkomstskattelagen 1999:1229)“Den som är begränsat skattskyldig är skattskyldig för kapitalvinst på sådana tillgångar och förpliktelser som avses i andra stycket, om han vid något tillfälle under det kalenderår då avyttringen sker eller under de föregående tio kalenderåren har varit bosatt i Sverige eller stadigvarande vistats här.”View source · accessed 2026-10-26 — Someone who leaves Sweden stays taxable on capital gains from selling Swedish shares and similar assets for the year of sale and the ten calendar years before it. PwC says many tax treaties reduce this ten-year period.
- Residency test
- A person is fully taxable in Sweden if resident, habitually staying, or still essentially connected after earlier residence. Skatteverket treats at least six months in a row as habitual stay and the law sets no day count, so PwC's wording of a stay exceeding six months is slightly off the official text. Income tax rates in Sweden
As of 2026, the headline personal income tax rate in Sweden is 52.38%ⓘSkatteverket (Swedish Tax Agency)“Den genomsnittliga kommunala skattesatsen för 2026 är 32,38 procent.”View source · accessed 2026-10-26. The 52.38% adds the 2026 average municipal and regional tax of 32.38% to the 20% state tax on taxable earned income above SEK 643,000; municipal rates run from 28.93% to 35.65%, giving 48.93% to 55.65% at the top. - Self employed social security contributions
- 28.97% (as of 2026)ⓘSkatteverket (Swedish Tax Agency)“Är du född 1959 eller senare och bedriver aktiv näringsverksamhet betalar du normalt full egenavgift, det vill säga 28,97 procent.”View source · accessed 2026-10-26 — Self-employed people born in 1959 or later pay 28.97% in egenavgifter on active business income. [source]Skatteverket (Swedish Tax Agency)“Det är ingen statlig inkomstskatt på beskattningsbar förvärvsinkomst upp till 643 000 kronor. PwC states the rate falls to 20% from 1 January 2027, which Skatteverket's 2026 page does not yet show.
- Six month rule work abroad
- A Swedish resident employed abroad for at least six months is not taxed in Sweden on that income if it is taxed in the work country and visits home stay within six days a month or 72 days a year. A one-year rule exempts the income even when the work country does not tax it.

Non-EU remote workers can visit for up to 90 days, and longer stays need a residence permit before entry.
- Self employed residence permit route
- The closest route for a freelancer is the self-employed residence permit, which needs SEK 200,000 in the applicant's own bank account plus SEK 100,000 for a spouse and SEK 50,000 per child. It requires running a business in Sweden, so it does not fit someone working for a foreign employer. When to talk to an advisor
This page maps Sweden’s general rules — it cannot weigh your treaty position, your family and asset ties, or the timing of a move. If meaningful money depends on the answer, have a qualified advisor in Sweden (and in your home country) review your situation before you act.
